The Small Things

I’m in the middle of my second week of hitting the Orange Theory workouts pretty hard and while I (almost) always appreciate the workouts afterwards, I don’t often WANT to go there. I go because I have to. I go because I made a promise to myself. I go because my bank account takes a pretty big hit every month that reminds me that I ought not waste that money.

But in coming back, there’s been a new (to me) trainer that’s been more-often-than-not teaching at my preferred time slot. And you know what she did? She learned my name on the first day I was back. Then she remembered me the next day and the one after that. This week she asked me, “So how many weeks in a row is this?” And during workouts she’ll give me kudos by name – a little gold star for this gold-star motivated student.

She does this for all the clients in there. She takes the time to watch people on the floor to make sure they’re doing exercises correctly. She’s always trying hard to motivate and call out people who are working hard.

And you know what? It really makes a difference for me. I find that the feeling of dread that I used to get before going to class isn’t there (at least not as much). I wouldn’t go so far as to say that I look forward to heading to Orange Theory, but it’s starting to feel more welcoming than it had in the past.

So, a shout out to people who go out of their way to make other people feel good about their effort. It really does matter.
