Happy Birthday! To me! I’m not old, though. Not by a long shot. Heck, I didn’t even age up into the next age group yet. And now – being the oldest in my age group gives me a built-in excuse for the year for not placing in races. See? A year of perks for my birthday.
But there are some ways that I’m noticing that I’m getting older….
Like, take my radio listening habits for instance. How many young people out there listen to talk radio? I mean, except maybe for ESPN to catch up on the sports scores or just to hear the traffic report? I did a scientific study and let me tell ya, the answer is none. With a big “uh DUH!” on the end of that for emphasis. So, I suppose it says something about me that I like talk radio. No, no… that’s not a fair statement. I REALLY like talk radio. Not only that, but my station of choice? NPR. Does it get any more adult than that? (oh, man, I do love me some Dick Gordon on The Story… check it out… don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone)
And when young folk make fun of me for my listening preferences, what’s my first reaction? Most of the rants coming out of my mouth start with, “Kids these days…”. Is there anything more old to say than that?
Oh, and here’s the clincher: my idea of the perfect Friday night? A little training after work, something quick but delicious for dinner, and then just a little bit of TV watching before going to bed around 9pm. Wow. Yup – just the thought of this makes me smile and get all warm and fuzzy inside. And you know what? I like going to bed early on Saturday night, too (though I might indulge and stay up until 10pm or so). Sleep has become one of the most important things in my life – I schedule events around it, I make friends with similar sleep habits so I don’t seem as weird, and savor every morning that I wake up early, refreshed and ready to meet the day because I got 8-10 hours of sleep the night before. Old? Nah… I’m just wise beyond my years.
So.. it’s my birthday. I’ve been trying to think of ways to celebrate, and haven’t really come up with anything. I don’t really want an alcohol-filled evening (does that make me old too?). As it’s been documented on here, I’m trying to be fairly nutritious, so even cake and such doesn’t hold so much appeal.
One thing I have on the docket: a training session with my personal trainer. Yes – I scheduled a beatdown for my birthday. What could be better? Instead of HAVING cupcakes, I’ll be called a cupcake for crying from the pain. Or something like that. Sounds memorable, doesn’t it? (and truthfully – to me – it does – again, weird that way).
But other than that? Hopefully just a relaxing evening. And – bed. EARLY. Nothing better, right?
YOU listen to NPR? Wow — you are getting old. Wait — I listen to NPR, and I’m not old yet, so what’s up with that? Oh, that’s right. I’m wise beyond my years — or something like that. Anyway, now that I mostly listen to podcasts, I am listening to more NPR than ever, and I love it.
